Rats: UK guides to getting rid of rats

Brown rats are widespread across the UK, living alongside people in towns, suburbs and the countryside. They are larger and more cautious than mice, and they cause more damage: rats gnaw through wood, plastic and cables, and can carry diseases, so a rat problem needs prompt attention.

Typical signs include larger droppings (around 1 to 2 cm), burrows near walls, sheds or decking, greasy smear marks along runs, gnawed holes of 2 cm or more, and heavier thuds and scraping in lofts or under floors. Outside, rats are drawn to open bins, compost, spilled bird seed and pet food.

Dealing with rats starts with removing food and shelter, clearing clutter and overgrown areas, and repairing damaged air bricks, drains and gaps around pipes. Natural deterrents placed along rat runs, in sheds, garages, lofts and under decking can help make these places less inviting.

Rats are a case where professional help is often the right step: if you see them in daylight, find burrows close to the house, or hear them inside walls every night, contact a pest controller or your local council.
